Unlocking the Potential of Energy Sites
About
UK Energy Infrastructure (UKEI) is a UK-based organisation focused on the strategic future of energy assets, land and infrastructure. We work at the intersection of power generation, large-scale development and high-demand industries, exploring how existing resources can be used more efficiently to support long-term growth.
Our perspective brings together experience in energy, land planning and industrial development to help shape forward-looking concepts that strengthen resilience and enable responsible investment.

UKEI was established to look differently at the UK’s existing energy landscape particularly legacy generation sites, brownfield land and locations with strong grid or energy connections.
Rather than seeing these sites as past their best, UKEI examines how they may be repositioned for the next phase of the energy transition and for the needs of modern industry.

Our work includes strategic evaluation of:
-
the future role of CCGT and flexible generation assets
-
opportunities to repurpose energy land for productive new uses
-
the potential for energy gateway hubs supporting high-demand sectors
-
sustainable planning approaches that balance economy and environment
We operate at a strategic, non-operational level focusing on insight, concepts and long-term scenarios helping inform decisions today that shape the energy system of tomorrow.

Our Journey
UKEI was founded around a simple observation: the UK already has an extraordinary foundation of energy infrastructure and strategic land but much of it is underused, misunderstood or disconnected from today’s needs.

What began as an interest in legacy power sites and their technical potential has grown into a broader mission: to understand how these locations, assets and networks could form the backbone of the next phase of the UK’s energy and industrial future.

Over time, our work has evolved across several key stages:

Exploring legacy energy sites
We started by analysing former power stations, CCGT locations and energy-connected land, looking at what remains — grid links, transport access, industrial footprints and skilled communities.

Understanding changing energy demands
As data centres, advanced manufacturing and electrification accelerate, we began examining how high-demand users intersect with energy availability, resilience and planning constraints.

Shaping future-ready concepts
From this came our interest in flexible generation, the evolving role of CCGTs, future-fuel readiness and the idea of energy gateway hubs — locations designed to support scalable, reliable, and sustainable power.
Looking ahead with purpose
Today, UKEI continues to expand its thinking, building strategic frameworks that help connect energy, land and industry in smarter ways always with a focus on responsible development and long-term value.

Our journey is ongoing — shaped by experience, grounded in realism, and guided by the belief that the UK can make much better use of the assets it already has.
